Communication Eight out of ten animals turned in to the animal shelter are reliquished because an owner doesn’t understand how to stop a dog from barking excessively, soiling in the house, digging in rose bushes or how to stop a cat from spraying in the house, or clawing the furniture.
These are all behaviors that are easy to modify. Easy if you understand how to communicate with your pet.Animals only want to please their leader. But, the leader needs to be kind and understanding. The human leader must really lead. Not shove, push, hit, or yell. Animals want to survive, belong and gain status. No matter how it looks, they are not sitting around all day plotting evenge. It just isn’t in their genes. Discipline Discipline comes from the word disciple. I have no idea how it came to mean yanking a dog around by the neck, hitting it with a newspaper or chasing a cat with a water squirt bottle. Respect Respect can never be demanded.
It must be earned. Never allow your dog to charge out an open door.Never allow your dog to pull you down the block on the end of a leash.Do not allow your pet to play roughly with small children, hurt other animals, or chase cats. These behaviors can be quickly eliminated without ever scolding or hitting your companion animal. Whenever you allow the above behaviors the animal interprets this to mean that you want him/her to be the leader. Then whenever you try to set the rules and make demands, the animal is confused. After all, second in line does not go around telling the leader what he should and should not do. |
